Susan Hirt Hagen is best known for being the first woman to join the board of directors of Erie Indemnity, Pennsylvania's third-largest auto insurer, in 1980. Whereas her husband, Thomas B. Hagen, chairs the board and is a former CEO, her father Henry Orth (H.O.) Hirt (d.1982) co-founded the firm back in 1925. Thanks to H.O.
Hirt who was wise enough to establish trusts in his name in 1967 which control Erie Indemnity's Class B voting stock, Susan Hirt Hagen and her family enjoy certain benefits and today sits on Erie Indemnity's board of directors. What's more, Susan is a co-trustee and co-owner of 35% of common shares through a family limited partnership. Aside from her engagements in the company, she has shown active community engagement that earned her a honorary doctor of humane letters from Ohio's Wittenberg University in 2011. The same year, Susan gave $6 million to endow Wittenberg's Center for Civic & Urban Engagement that now bears her name.
